 | | Conrad Buff (1886-1975)Conrad Buff was born in Switzerland in 1886 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1905. Buff settled in Wisconsin because of its large Swiss population and took a job as a shepherd. Finding this work boring, he left and for 10 years drifted around the southwest taking odd jobs and painting in his spare time. In 1906, Buff moved to Los Angeles where he would eventually meet his wife, an assistant curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Buff made frequent sketching trips to the southwest, where he befriended Maynard Dixon, who influenced Buff’s work. Conrad Buff was a self-taught artist, remembered for his strong, stark, modernist desertscapes.
