 |  | Josephine Culbertson (1852-1939)Josephine Culbertson was born in Shanghai, China in 1852 to American missionary parents. When her father was killed, Josephine and her mother moved to New York where Josephine studied at the Parker School with William Merritt Chase. Josephine Culbertson moved to California in 1905, settling in Carmel. Her home is remembered as a meeting place for local artists, serving as the birthplace of the Carmel Art Association. Culbertson actively painted local scenes of the Monterey Peninsula until her death there in 1939.
