William Merritt Chase (1849-1916)

William Merritt Chase was born in Franklin, Indiana in 1849. At the age of 20 Chase left for study at the National Academy of Design, on the advice of his first art teacher Barton Hays. Further study would follow at the Royal Academy in Munich. Chase returned to the states in 1878 to a job at the Art Students League and that same year acquired the former studio of Albert Bierstadt. Chase’s studio would become a gathering spot for a generation of American artists. In addition to his legacy of paintings influenced first by the Munich School and later by the lighter palette of the Impressionists, Chase is often best remembered for the thousands of students he taught at the Chase School of Art, the Art Students League and at summer classes in Shinnecock and Carmel.
